Welcome to The World-Famous Edwardian Ball. Table of Contents

What is The Edwardian Ball?

Nigh impossible to describe, but absolutely delightful to experience. The Edwardian Ball is an elegant and whimsical celebration of art, music, theatre, fashion, technology, circus, and the beloved creations of the late, great author and illustrator Edward Gorey.

Set in a re-imagined “Edwardian Era,” this multi-city, multi-media extravaganza has grown over the past seventeen years from an underground club party into an internationally recognized festival of the arts, now operating with the blessing of The Edward Gorey Charitable Trust.

Attendees traveling from across the nation and from all corners of the globe flock to this West Coast celebration for a delightful blend of ballroom dancing, live music, riveting stage shows, DJs and dancing, fine art installations, an award-winning vendor bazaar, mystical and nonsensical oddities, absinthe cocktails, steam machinery, parlour games, alluring sideshows, and much more. All ages are welcome and appropriate in this darkly humorous and elegant setting, where literary aficionados rub elbows with chimney sweeps, where the sensual meets the bizarre, where historically accurate Edwardian re-creationists waltz through the steam-powered tea garden… where the only guiding rule is that you join in on the fun!

glober-theater-copyThe Globe Theater – You have spoken, and we have heeded your requests. It is our honor and privilege to present the 8th Annual Edwardian Ball Los Angeles in its new and expanded location at the historic Globe Theatre in the heart of Los Angeles’ Broadway Downtown Theatre District.

Thusly, let us prepare to both create and be immersed in theatrical history. The Globe has had the pleasure of entertaining Presidents and celebrities for more than a century, most notably Charlie Chaplin who never missed a performance (always sitting in the stage right Presidential Balcony) and Marilyn Monroe (who frequented the left).

PresHallThe Big Bad Preservation Hall Brass Band

Following in the footsteps of the great New Orleans jazz tradition, The PresHall Brass is the resident brass band of New Orleans most treasured jazz venue, Preservation Hall. Comprised of members of the great Olympia and Young Tuxedo Brass Bands, PHB tours worldwide spreading the musical gospel of New Orleans’ unique musical and cultural heritage. Led by the 84 years young Daniel “Weenie” Farrow, the PHB repertoire spans from traditional classics to the hard-hitting marching tunes heard in New Orleans parades.

Aurora Nealand and the Royal Roses

The Royal Roses grew out of the rich resurgence that traditional jazz is seeing in New Orleans amongst the younger generation of musicians today. Saxophonist/vocalist Aurora Nealand has been playing in various groups in New Orleans since 2005, and the Royal Roses, founded in 2010, is her first venture as a bandleader. The Royal Roses draw their repertoire heavily from Sidney Bechet, Django Reinhart and traditional jazz of New Orleans. Comprised of some of the finest young players on the New Orleans music scene today, the Royal Roses are seeking to breath new energy, arrangements and compositions into this genre of music while exploring and learning from its rich history and tradition.

The G String Orchestra

The G String Orchestra plays traditional and original eastern European folk and klezmer music and is based out of New Orleans, LA. GSO is currently an instrumental trio consisting of violin, accordion, and double bass playing pan-Balkan music ranging from romantic waltzes to driving coceks, pulsing horas to foot moving bulgars, heart wrenching greek rembetica ballads to the hungarian czardas!

Emcee Guglielmo, the Opera singing sideshow sensation!

Edwardian Ball Fashion

what-to-wear-edwardian-ball-2014-s-82Good new, Edwardians! You can dress for this event, and have a great time doing so. One of the key successes of our event is that we do not have a dress code, no kind of look or fashion is “right” or required. Our only request — and please, this we beseech of you — is that you dress up in some manner, step out of your ordinary life, and join the celebration! For some this might mean an elaborate, hand-made gown or corset. For others it might be a playful hat or twirly mustache. Or that fancy pair of knickers and boots. And there’s always your basic, elegant black…

what-to-wear-edwardian-ball-2015-178Some popular themes include the Edwardian Era (early 1900s – think corsets & petticoats for the girls, top hats & vests for the boys), Edward Gorey-inspired characters (eccentric & spanning many decades, as you can see in his artwork), Tim Burton-sque (dark, humorous, eccentric), formal, goth, steampunk, or just simply “dressed up for an elegant night on the town!” Our multitude of photo galleries will give you an amazing assortment of ideas and our Resource Page offers many places to purchase or rent clothing, costumes, and accessories.

And don’t forget, we have our famous, carefully curated Vendor Bazaar open both nights of the event, plus daytime shopping hours on Saturday, from noon to 5pm, where you can pick up that last-minute perfect costume or accessory. And remember, this event is all ages, so have fun dressing as a group or family!

Are costumes required?

No. We won’t turn you away! BUT, that being said, we strongly encourage you to don some kind of costume, to create some kind of character, and to enjoy the experience of stepping out of your everyday life and into a playful, imaginary world. We can say without exaggeration that at least 99% of attendees are in some kind of costumed attire, whether simple or elaborate, to enhance participation and join in the fun. Enjoy perusing our famous Portrait Booth to see and be inspired by what people have done.

Do you allow in's and out's

No, we are sorry but The Regency Ballroom does not permit attendees to leave and re-enter without purchasing a new ticket. There are safety and liability concerns with re-entry that make this a “no exceptions” rule.

Do you offer seating?

Yes – all of our VIP tickets offer seating on our Ballroom Mezzanine level. We also offer limited, first-come, first-served seating on our Ballroom, Museum, and Vendor Bazaar levels.

Is the event appropriate for all ages?

Yes! We try to carefully craft an event that is exciting for adults but appropriate for children of all ages. We love having children at the event and consider this a measure of success! That being said, this event is clearly not for everyone: Some of our content is “dark” by design or somewhat alluring or adult in nature, so please choose carefully based on your own values and what you feel is appropriate for young ones that may be accompanying you. And things definitely get a little steamier in the wee hours, say, past the witching hour of midnight when the little ones have been sent to bed. Any questions or concerns can be sent to queries@edwardianball.com and we will follow up with you. Also- we are now offering a deeply discounted “Young Edwardian” ticket for our Friday Night event, for children 15 and under.

I heard the Ball is not the same as it used to be? Is that true?

Yes, that is true. Everything changes, including you!

The Globe Theatre is a centennial theatre located in the heart of The Broadway Downtown Theatre District.  It is the oldest functioning theatre in the district and has the title of the First Legitimate Broadway Theatre.

History: In 1928 producer Henry Duffy leased the Morosco theatre and renamed President Theatre. Among the actors who appeared on the stage at this time was Edward Everett Horton. In 1930, Fox West Coast Theatres took control and equipped it for motion pictures and it became the first continuous newsreel theatre in Los Angeles, having then been renamed Newsreel Theatre. By 1941, Sol Lesser’s Principle Theatres Corp. of America were operating it as the President Theatre again. Some minor alterations were carried out to the plans of architect S. Charles Lee in 1945, probably the marquee we see today was added at this time. Metropolitan Theatres took control and it was renamed Globe Theatre. The building was taken over by new owners and in 2014 work began on a restoration to house an up-market nightclub. The interior of the building was left intact and the lobby has been refurbished to provided a mirrored entrance to the new venue, which opened in August 2015.

What’s it All About?

music-imageThe musical art form represents the origin of The Ball. At the most recent turn of the century, Edwardian Ball founders Rosin Coven collaborated with an incredibly creative cast of characters to dream up a music and story-based celebration of Edward Gorey. Ever since, music has permeated the essence of the event. From Viennese waltz to electroswing, from Cabaret to New Orleans jazz, it always comes back to the Edwardian soundtrack.

art-4Perhaps the most nebulous of all practices, Art is where you find it. We carefully curate a diverse roster of artist across media, and invite you to experience, reflect, discuss, love, disagree, and dream. Some would call it the Absolute Reflection of Truth.

theater-3Life, death, humor, sadness, light, dark, victory, defeat. Enter the theatrical world of the Edwardian Ball, where costume and character meet and mingle in a beautiful exchange of culture. Yes, there are stages, but the true theatrical of The Ball is created by those that choose to join in the fun.

dance-2Step onto the dance floor and immerse in fiery tangoes and elegant waltzes. Edwardian Disc Jockeys lead a collage of shaking and shimmying as the hours press on. Dance troupes parade through the room, across the stages, high kicks and low low sounds. Cabaret, ballet, and bewitching burlesque…. shall we dance?

fashion-2Oh what to wear, what to wear!? The answer is simple- that which separates The Edwardian Ball from everyday life. Costume and character. Clothing makes the creature. Unparalleled elegance meets unstoppable mischief. Dress up. Enjoy life. Play along. Help create the show… it’s beautiful!

circus-2Co-hosts Vau de Vire Society bring unparalleled talent to the arena of Circus Arts. Not just onstage, but within and without, behind every corner and undiscovered experience, you will gasp, laugh, cry, and remember.

vendor-2A refutation of mass production! Our widely renowned Vendor Bazaar features over 50 carefully-chosen artisan vendors, presenting a dizzying array of creations. The Bazaar is open during all nighttime events, plus dedicated daytime shopping hours in San Francisco.

games-1Shall we? Perhaps a test of skill. A lucky throw. A clever rhyme. A sharp memory. An invitation to those around you to stop working and start playing. Games new and old, find joy in the clever tests of mettle. Let’s play again.

From the Founder

According to co-founder and executive producer, Justin Katz; “Once we get everyone through the door and into the ballroom, there is a leveling of the field that doesn’t exist in a stratified city. We’re all in this world, we’re all making it up, none of it really exists before this thing starts and it all goes away after. For a couple of days, it’s like a reprieve, an imagined society.

For the most part, it’s a fairly inclusive and polite society. We were reflecting on the dwindling politeness that accompanies the expectations of being catered to. “I can have anything I want, any time I want.” That’s just not the vibe in here. You come in through the door, it doesn’t matter, you might have come in through the VIP entrance or you might have come in through the carnie door, once we’re on the ballroom floor and we’re playing games together, we’re sharing the world.”

Who Is Edward?

A truly prodigious and original artist, Edward St. John Gorey (1925-2000), gave to the world over one hundred works, including The Gashlycrumb Tinies, The Doubtful Guest and The Wuggly Ump; prize-winning set and costume designs for innumerable theater productions from Cape Cod to Broadway; a remarkable number of illustrations in publications such as The New Yorker and The New York Times, and in books by a wide array of authors from Charles Dickens to Edward Lear, Samuel Beckett, John Updike, Virginia Woolf, H.G. Wells, Florence Heide, and many others. His well-known animated credits for the PBS Mystery series have introduced him to millions of television viewers. Gorey’s masterful pen and ink illustrations and his ironic, offbeat humor have brought him critical acclaim and an avid following throughout the world.

Edward VII (Albert Edward; 9 November 1841 – 6 May 1910) was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions and Emperor of India from 22 January 1901 until his death. As king, Edward played a role in the modernisation of the British Home Fleet and the reorganisation of the British Army after the Second Boer War. He re-instituted traditional ceremonies as public displays and broadened the range of people with whom royalty socialised. He fostered good relations between Britain and other European countries, especially France, for which he was popularly called “Peacemaker”, but his relationship with his nephew, Kaiser Wilhelm II, was poor. The Edwardian era, which covered Edward’s reign and was named after him, coincided with the start of a new century and heralded significant changes in technology and society, including steam turbine propulsion and the rise of socialism. He died in 1910 in the midst of a constitutional crisis that was resolved the following year by the Parliament Act 1911, which restricted the power of the unelected House of Lords.

rosin-covenROSIN COVEN – EDWARDIAN HOUSE BAND & FOUNDERS OF THE EDWARDIAN BALL, your Edwardian Ball hosts, dreamt up this spectacle long ago in a dust-covered martini bar in the middle of a dust-filled desert. They proudly continue the tradition of bringing an Edward Gorey story to life each year in partnership with their friends, The Vau de Vire Society. Eight musicians blend violin, cello, contrabass, guitar, vibraphone, trombone, trumpet, drums and lush vocal harmonies in a strangely beautiful mix of classical, jazz, chamber, tango, klezmer, sultry lounge, theatrical cabaret, and cinematic dreams. Also known as the “World’s Premier Pagan Lounge Ensemble,” they continue to surprise even themselves.

vdv-pinterestVau de Vire Society – Spawned from the depths of San Francisco’s thriving Dance and Circus sub-cultures, the Vau de Vire Society has ravaged and titillated the live entertainment scene causing jaws to drop in awe and admiration around the Bay Area and beyond. This Avant-Cabaret community consists of classically-trained dancers, some of the nations most acclaimed acrobats, aerial artists, contortionists and circus side-show acts, an array of unique fire-performers, a handful of thespians and a barrage of the most enticing go-go’s. The group has been cross-pollinating genres by collaborating with an eclectic variety of world-renowned musicians and Dj’s in creating original stage shows and festival productions for the non- pretentious. Most notable collaborators include Cirque du Soleil, San Francisco Symphony, Peaches, the Alkaline Trio, The Dresden Dolls, Fishbone, Rosin Coven, Crystal Method and many other widely respected artists.

Travel Tips for Getting to and from The 8th Annual Edwardian Ball.

We’re all aware The Edwardian Ball  is looming large on the horizon.

Traveling to and from Los Angeles is really not at all arduous and expensive as it might seem.

We Californians love the freedom our cars afford, right? Whenever I have to travel from the Bay Area to Los Angeles or Las Vegas, I always drive. It’s WAY cheaper, as $50 in gas is all it takes for my very economical Prius to make the roundtrip SF-to-LA excursion, but your mileage may vary. The cost of flying and renting a car in Los Angeles exponentially jacks up the cost of any north-south California trip compared to driving. Plus, it’s literally the EXACT same amount of door-to-door driving travel time from SF to LA compared to flying.

The benefits of driving are you have your own car, you’re traveling in privacy, you can transport more stuff, carpooling reduces the overall expense, and you’re not suffering “airport indignation” by submitting to TSA full-body cavity searches, inexplicable flight delays, and other passengers passing gas in your general direction or uncontrollable screaming babies (who always seem to be in the seat directly behind you), once you’re in that cramped flying aluminum tube.

The best route is straight down the I-5 and from just about anywhere in the Bay Area, and you’re in Hollywood in 5 to 6 hours, taking into account you schedule your drive to avoid the Southern California morning or after rush hours.

The Megabus

megabusIf you’re really on a budget, try Megabus.com. For about $41 each way, you can bus down to Union Station in downtown LA in seven and a half hours and then either cab or Uber it, or take the Metro Redline 802, over to the Fonda Theatre area in 20 to 30 additional minutes. Here’s the Red Line 802 GoogleMap: https://goo.gl/maps/Bgi3mxB8h3

The better, and more economical, airlines that have regularly scheduled commuter flights from Oakland International andvirgin-america-logoSan Francisco International to either Bob Hope Airport in Burbank or Los Angeles International (LAX) are below. At the time of publication, the following airlines were offering roundtrip prices from SFO or OAK to either Bob Hope Airport in Burbank or LAX ranging from $130 to $160 and up, which are pretty decent prices:

Southwest.com – SFO or Oakland to Burbank service starts at $59 each way from Oakland. Southwest permits one free checked bag on domestic flights.

Ground Transportation
I have never had a bad experience with any of these ground transportation services, and frankly, one can feel pretty spoiled when using Uber.com.

Born and raised in Japan, Kayo, as a little girl, always dreamed of one day becoming just like the heroes and heroines of her favorite anime series. Everyone probably has experienced such desire of becoming somebody else or a different version of themselves. Every girl at one-point dreams of becoming as powerful and cool or gorgeous and smart like those heroines in her favorite cartoon shows. Anime and cartoons are depiction of a world that is not real, and this world of non- reality is only step away from reality. We hold unlimited potential, and nothing is impossible in a sense. We can make anything possible. We can even make non-reality into reality. Kayo wants to make her fashion into a bride between reality and non – reality. By combining the non- reality of anime with the reality of street fashion, KAYO transforms the wearers into different characters, characters that they create within themselves (one of their alter-egos so to speak), bringing out the different part of them with what they wear each day. The world is interested and intrigued by the possibilities of interactions and collaboration between mediums that are entirely different and otherwise unrelated. The integration of anime and fashion is only the beginning of the endless possibilities. KAYO wants to always intrigue and surprise by finding in the audience the yet different aspect of self, As you gain new experiences and keep changing because Kayo believes that fashion is an expression and representation of different faces we contain within ourselves.

From points distant and beyond we all converged on Petaluma in 1993 and ’94 with an unenunciated desire to be more than we were before. The core of Lagunitas came from Chicago, St Louis, Memphis, Walker Creek, and the highlands of Quincy.

The Chicago contingent initiated the brewing and the gravitational effect of its suchness did the rest. We all loved the beer but the mission was larger than the ordinary joy of a hoppy-sweet quaff. It was driven unseen by an urge to communicate with people, to find our diasporidic tribe, and to connect with other souls adrift on a culture that had lost its center and spun its inhabitants to the four winds to wander lost and bereft with a longing to re-enter the light. Beer, we have learned, has always been a good lubricant for social intercourse!

The Lagunitas Brewing Co. was not so much an act of ordinary ‘foundling’ as it was willed into being by the unspoken desire of supportive beer-lovers in Northern California after which they continued to nurture their creation and urged us forward to fulfill the unifying needs of that same beer-loving diaspora from coast to coast and beyond. It is good to have friends!
